Samsung defies the Amazon Kindle | Economy-Printed | La Prensa … – The Press

The South Korean company yesterday launched a tablet for reading e-books, with the cooperation of the bookstore chain Barnes Noble.

22/08/2014 – Barnes Noble Inc. began selling a brand Nook tablet made by Samsung Electronics Co., with the aim of using the technological prowess of the South Korean company to challenge Amazon.com Inc. Kindle market e-readers.

The new Samsung Galaxy Tab Nook is a 7-inch device (18 inches) that combines the features of a regular tablet with Nook software for electronic books, the companies said yesterday in statement. Barnes Noble, the largest bookstore chain, is offering the product in over 660 stores as well as online.

Barnes Noble partnered with Samsung in June after losing money in an effort to sell its own e-reading hardware. The agreement allows the bookstore chain to offer an alternative to the Kindle while reducing costs. For Samsung, the Nook brand and retail placement Barnes Noble gives a new edge against Apple Inc. and Amazon in the tablet market.

“Having people you can go and talk, know there is a store that stands behind the product, make a difference to a lot of people, “said the chief executive, Mike Huseby, in an interview.

The new Nook also make people go to Barnes Noble stores, Huseby, who unveiled the tablet at a store near Union Square in Manhattan said.
