When we are looking for a device for reading electronic books, Kindle is unrivaled. It’s just like when he left the first Game Boy or the first iPod, are products that excel in a specific area and, as for reading eBooks, Amazon is the undisputed king. Now we have a new Kindle Paperwhite, which further enhances the experience with the previous model.

Let there be light!

previous Kindle models have always been praised for their quality of reading, offering an experience closer to paper and away from the bright screens of our electronic devices. With the arrival of the Kindle Paperwhite included a backlit display that facilitates its use in low-light situations.

I have to admit that at first I thought that the inclusion of this feature would ruin the “Kindle experience”. I was wrong. This device offers the possibility to adapt the light from the screen to your liking is a plus point . Amazon has solved very well the degree to which adjusts the brightness of the screen, which can go very slowly increasing, unchanged aggressive.

This means we can be in a dark room with a small lamp on and activate the backlight up to 10%, be supportive and complementing the surrounding natural lighting . The result is a much more enjoyable and comfortable viewing. Once used, you never want to use a Kindle without this feature.

Hardware

Not much new in this aspect. We are dealing with a product with a similar look the first Kindle Paperwhite, which was introduced a little over a year. The new model has the same weight, same battery and same dimensions. As a curiosity, the logos are different: the logo front where you can read “kindle” and especially in the rear where the same word has disappeared and has been replaced by “Amazon” in a glossier finish.

class=”alignright”> Same weight, same battery and same dimensions as the previous model still has a micro USB port on the bottom to load the device and connect it to the computer. Right next to it we can find the button on and off, which is a constant in the different models of Kindle. No more, no more buttons, as we continue to find to a touchscreen , by which we manage the different menus. I still miss the headphone jack old models

processor has been updated , from 800 MHz to 1 GHz, providing faster response whenever you had a page and browsing through the store, etc.. It’s very subtle, since the model last year and worked in a fluid, but always appreciated that lighten the load times. At the same time, the display has been updated offering improved contrast, but also a slight improvement.

Software

Interface you make is also virtually identical to the first model. In the menu at the top we have our books, choosing among which are stored in the Amazon cloud or that we downloaded to the internal memory. At the bottom we show books that have “won awards,” a way to entice the user to keep buying books and generate more profit for the company.

I find it very useful to be able to consult any word in the dictionary and in Wikipedia , the latter being a safe option that you’ll end up using constantly. To activate it, just have to press a second (so you do not get confused and go to page) a word or slide your finger on several contextual menu will appear.

I keep longing

class=”alignright”> In full reading can move from page swiping one side or just touching one thereof. It works great, but I’m longing for the buttons of my first Kindle because by holding the frame of the device with one hand could turn the page without having to separate the hand or make a gesture overtime.

To enable the menu

have to touch the top of the screen and displayed the different options: find a word, change the lighting, go to the store or return to the main menu. Includes a browser based on WebKit , which works much better than previous Kindle models. Useful if you want quick consult a particular thing, but I doubt anyone use this device to surf regularly.

At the bottom right of the screen appears that shows the total percentage of the book that we completed. On the opposite side (bottom left) you can see the page number and pressing can know how long it will take to finish the chapter or the whole book. Just to prove we lack integration with Goodreads, Amazon bought the platform last March. This service is expected to be active by the end of this year, allowing users receive recommendations based on your tastes or preferences.

Conclusion

is difficult to improve something that no one has passed . Amazon has updated some features of the eBook reader, with which it intends to continue to lead the market for these devices. The Kindle Paperwhite is doing well all its tasks and today I can think of few areas where you need to evolve. Obviously, you get the menu navigation faster, but now I think it offers a very acceptable quality. If you’re looking for an e-book reader, I recommend you stop looking and pick this product.
