The Kindle Fire HDX outperforms its predecessor - The Wall Street Journal Americas

Imagine if you could call a specialist service and this is presented in a matter of seconds in a live video on your digital device. And now imagine that person can draw on your screen or even take control of your device to solve a problem.

That is precisely what can the latest model of the Kindle Fire tablet, the Kindle Fire HDX. This assistance system, called Mayday button (meaning relief), is the most unusual feature in what otherwise would be a normal evolution of color tablets the company.

However, a better help system is not exactly the main reason to buy a new tablet. After all, the tablets should be simple and easy to use. But Mayday fits the durable and deserved reputation for customer service from Amazon.

I’ve been testing

HDX Fire color tablet is a good and simple. This latest model, the starting price is U.S. $ 229 in the U.S. for 7-inch version I used, is clearly better than the Fire HD last year, which started at $ 199 for the 7 inch version. (There is also a large and expensive version of the HDX, with a 8.9-inch screen).

For now, the tablet is only available in the U.S. through Amazon.com and several retail stores. The company has not yet announced the launch date of the product outside the U.S., said a spokeswoman for Amazon.

Like previous models of Fire, is best described as a passport in hardware to purchase digital content from Amazon. The base model shoots ad from the home screen, but you can buy one without advertising for $ 15 more.

Fire 7-inch HDX, like its predecessor, yet is so versatile and offers many functions as rival tablets like Apple iPad Mini or Google Nexus 7. It offers only a fraction of third-party applications available in stores Apple or Google and lacks popular apps like Instagram, Dropbox, Google Maps, YouTube and Netflix (Netflix says Amazon is coming soon).

Unlike the iPad Mini or the Nexus, the HDX Fire does not have a rear camera and therefore not easy environments show a video conversation (the larger model does have rear camera).

the HDX does not have an equivalent of artificial intelligence programs, controlled by voice commands, such as Apple’s Siri and Google Now.

tablet offers a battery life of 7.5 hours regularly exceeds 6 hours of the Nexus 7, but is lower at 10 hours and 27 minutes of the iPad Mini. (I used my standard test in which I put the screen on 75% brightness, I keep Wi-Fi on and I play videos stored on the tablet until the battery runs out).

So what makes the new Kindle HDX exceeds the previous model? Well, have a splendid display that offers high resolution 323 pixels per inch, the same as the last Nexus 7 U.S. $ 229, much higher than the 163 pixels per inch iPad Mini of $ 329 (although the mini’s screen is much larger, 7.9 inches). The screen also could read somewhat better than the iPad under the sunlight. The Fire HDX has a faster processor than the delay of the device removed since cycled to when I started to work I noticed when testing the model of last year.

HDX

Fire also has a new operating system and some new features that are great. The home screen carousel still showing apps, songs, books and videos recently used, but that now appear below the icons of your favorite applications and you can hide the carousel if distracting. There is also a new sidebar to quickly switch from one active application to another. This appears when you slide your finger from the corner of the screen.

Perhaps

new feature that I like is called X-Ray for Music, which displays the lyrics of the songs you are listening to a synchronized manner. Until now, only available in “tens of thousands” of the 25 million songs from Amazon.

Fire HDX is thinner and lighter than last year’s model. But since the edge is narrower, the power and volume buttons are on the back of the tablet. I found them cumbersome and slow to use. Like its predecessors, the HDX Fire is technically an Android tablet that hides Android to end it invisible. The HDX lacks any indication of the Android interface, applications that come standard on most Android devices and standard store Android applications, Google Play. Instead, use an operating system called Fire Amazon OS 3.0. Amazon has its own store for Fire HDX and has 85,000 applications, compared with nearly one million respectively in Google app stores and Apple. If you are looking for a tablet primarily used regularly consume content and content from Amazon, the new Kindle Fire HDX is a good choice.
